Scale-Out File Server is a Windows Storage technology providing continuously available clustered storage services.  Scale-out File Servers provide the ability to provide multiple clients write access to the same CSV files and folders served simultaneously by multiple nodes of the same cluster.  Write and read access is coordinated by the SoFS and Cluster services.  Performance can be increased (scaled out) by adding additional servers to the SoFS storage cluster.

SOFS is ideal for server application storage such as Hyper-V VM Virtual Hard Disk files.  This provides similar reliability, availability, manageability, and high performance services as traditional high-end Storage Area Network (SAN) products.  All file shares are simultaneously online on all nodes.
